Lorenz-Günther Köstner

Lorenz -Günther Kostner ( born January 30, 1952 in Wall rock ) is a former German football player and current coach.

Career as a player

Köstner graduated as a midfielder 91 top-flight appearances and 86 second division games for Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayer Uerdingen and Arminia Bielefeld. With Mönchengladbach he won the German championship in 1975 and the UEFA Cup.

Career as a coach

His coaching career began at FC Bayern Hof in the 1981 season / 82nd

He worked in the season 1986/87 and 1987/88 the SSV Reutlingen 05 before he became coach at professional clubs. So trained from July 1 to August 26, 1989 very brief SC Freiburg, a month later KSV Hessen Kassel (13 September 1989 until end of season). From July 1, 1990 to June 30, 1993, he worked as an assistant coach under Christoph Daum at VfB Stuttgart, with whom he became German champion in 1992. He then coached the Stuttgarter Kickers.

When he was SpVgg Unterhaching from the 1994/95 season with a break ( 1 FC Cologne from 1 October 1997 to 30 June 1998) a total of six years coach. Kostner had the Munich suburb Club led to the Bundesliga in 1999 and reached the following season the tenth place in the table. He was, after Unterhaching was relegated from the first Bundesliga again, released on 13 September 2001.

From 1 October 2002, he coached the then second division club Karlsruher SC. In spite of a valid contract until the summer of 2006 he was on leave there on 20 December 2004. In summer 2005, a commitment by the then third division VfR Aalen failed despite agreement with the club since the Karlsruher SC Köstner refused to release. On 24 December 2005, he was the successor of Hans- Dieter Flick as coach of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the Regionalliga. After a less successful season, he resigned in the spring of 2006. He was replaced by Ralf Rangnick.

On 17 November 2006 Kostner became the new head coach of the second division club Rot-Weiss Essen. One day after a 0-3 defeat at the district rivals MSV Duisburg, the club decided on 21 May 2007 not to renew the contract Köstners after direct re descent food.

For the second half of the season 2008/ 09 Köstner was from Bernd Hollerbach as coach of the second team of VfL Wolfsburg. His contract ran until the end of the season 2009/10. January 25, 2010 Kostner took over after the release from Armin Veh until the end of the season the duties of the head coach of the first team of VfL Wolfsburg. With the start of the 2010/11 season Kostner took his position as coach of the second team of VfL Wolfsburg on again.

In October 2012 Kostner was again first-team coach of VfL Wolfsburg after Felix Magath had been released from his duties. VfL was at this time with five points on the last place in the Bundesliga. Kostner took over in January 2013, the U-23 team of the club after Dieter Hecking was engaged as the new head coach.

After Köstner after 1 July 2013 initially exercised no more trainer function, obliged him Fortuna Dusseldorf in December of the same year as the successor to Mike Büskens and interim coach Oliver Reck with a contract period to 30 June 2015.
