Luc Bourdon

Luc Bourdon (born 16 February 1987 in Shippagan, New Brunswick, † 29 May, 2008 Lamèque, New Brunswick) was a Canadian ice hockey player. During his career he played between 2006 and 2008 36 games for the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League and 52 games for their farm team, the Manitoba Moose in the American Hockey League.

Career

Bourdon, who had to fight in his childhood with arthritis played as 15 -year-old first at the Miramichi Rae's Yamaha Rivermen in the New Brunswick Midget Hockey League. In summer 2003, it chose the Val- d'Or Foreurs from third position overall in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey Draft League. Right at the beginning of the 2003/04 season was the defender in the squad of Foreurs and completed 64 games in which he scored eight points scorer. The following season he quadrupled his point yield. His performance on the offensive and defensive eventually led that he was in the first round selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 2005 as the tenth player from the Vancouver Canucks. Bourdon took the following autumn also in the training camp of the Canucks in part, but was sent for further development back in the QMJHL. There the Canadians the season started again in Val- d'Or and headed in the first 20 games of 20 points at. On 4 January 2006 he was however transferred to league rivals Moncton Wildcats, who lined up in this year's Memorial Cup. However Bourdon retired shortly after the change of a serious injury. He broke his fibula and also withdrew several sprains and ligament tears to. Only for the playoffs, he came back fit and won with the Wildcats, the Coupe du Président.

The 2006/07 season Bourdon finally began after good performances in training camp with the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League. They had offered to him in May 2006, a three- year contract. After nine games early in the season but was sent back to Moncton, before it transferred them to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on 8 January 2007. The defender ended his final QMJHL season there and met in the playoffs of the American Hockey League with the Manitoba Moose. These were the farm team of the Canucks. After it missed the defender in the fall of 2007 to get a place in the squad Vancouver, he began the 2007/08 season with the Moose. In November, he then played for the Canucks in the NHL. On 16 November, in a 6-2 victory against the Minnesota Wild in a power play, he scored his first NHL goal. Although he was sent back to the Manitoba Moose in the meantime, but the end of January the defenders managed to re- jump to the NHL and fought his way up to the end of the season a regular place in the Canucks.

On 29 May 2008 Bourdon died in a motorcycle accident near his hometown.

Internationally

Bourdon represented his country three times in international tournaments. For the first time he played in the U18 Junior World Championship 2005, where he won the silver medal with the team. In addition, he was honored as the best defender of the tournament. The following year he won at the U20 World Junior Championship gold medal and also received a nomination in the All- Star team of the tournament. The medal win repeated Canadians with Bourdon in the following year.
