Lümanda Parish

Lümanda (German Lümmada ) is a rural municipality in the Estonian Saare County with an area of ​​199.49 km ². It has 876 inhabitants ( 2007).

Lümanda located in the extreme west of the island of Saaremaa. In addition to the eponymous capital of the country parish includes the villages of Atla, Austla, Eeriksaare, Himmiste, Jõgela, Karala, Kipi, Koimla, Koki, Koovi, Kotlandi, Kulli, Kuusnõmme, Kärdu, Leedri, Metsapere, Mõisaküla, Põlluküla, Riksu, Taritu, Vahva, Vana- Lahetaguse, Varpe and Viidu.

Lümanda was first mentioned in documents in 1522. The most famous personality of the rural community is the German Baltic South Pacific and Antarctic explorer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen, who spent his childhood on the farm Pilguse.

Parts of the community are in the National Park Vilsandi and in the nature reserve of Viidumäe. The unspoilt nature with woods and cliffs in summer attracts many nature lovers.

Lümanda maintains community partnerships with Nousiainen in Finland, Östergarn - Gammelgarn on the island of Gotland in Sweden and Eksjö.
