Määvli is an abandoned village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Pühalepa ( Pühalepa vald ). It is the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ).

Population and location

The village lies in the interior of the island of Hiiumaa, nine kilometers southwest of the island's capital Kärdla ( German Kertel ).

Määvli ( German Maebli ) today no more inhabitants (as of 31 December 2011).

It is known especially in the remote moors of Määvli ( Määvli raba ), which is surrounded by deep forests. In the southern part of the moor springs from the river Nuutri ( Nuutri Jõgi ).

History

After the conclusion of the German - Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, August 23, 1939 had the Republic of Estonia, which had been allocated to the Soviet sphere of interest, agree to the stationing of troops of the Red Army on its territory. On 19 October 1939, the first Soviet military arrived on the island of Hiiumaa.

The area near the village Määvli was intended as a shooting range. At the time, the place consisted of four farms with 34 people. On July 15, 1940 broke through the shooting and bombing exercises from a large forest fire in the area. Thirty square kilometers of forest were destroyed in the process. The village had to be abandoned.
