Magnus Magnusson

Magnus Magnusson ( born October 12, 1929 in Reykjavik on Iceland; † 7 January 2007 Balmore, Dunbartonshire, Scotland in the United Kingdom ) was an Icelandic- British television presenter, journalist, translator, writer and historian. Magnusson also reached a high level of awareness through its 25 years, ending work as host and moderator in the British quiz show Mastermind on BBC Two.

Biography

Magnusson grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland, where his father was Icelandic consul. According to the tradition of the Icelandic naming it would actually Magnús Sigursteinsson should be called. But his family was based on their Scottish ancestors in the choice of his first name Magnus and he retained by the last name of his father Magnusson.

He went to the Edinburgh Academy to school and then completed his degree at Jesus College, Oxford. He then worked as a journalist for the daily newspaper Scottish Daily Express and The Scotsman. From 1967 he worked as a freelancer and was at the time working at the BBC, where he worked presenter at programs on the history and archeology, as well as news broadcasts. He was appointed rector from 1975 to 1978 at the University of Edinburgh and later as Chancellor at Glasgow Caledonian University. The addition, he also served as Chief Executive of Scottish Natural Heritage, a government organization that deals with issues in Scotland to the environment.

Magnusson presented as a moderator from 1972 to 1997 the long-running British television quiz show Mastermind. Magnusson's trademark in the TV show Mastermind was the saying. " I've started so I'll finish " ( I've started so I'll finish speaking. ), Which was taken over by his successor John Humphrys. This saying was always, when the signal at the end of the rate period came for a candidate before the last question had been fully expressed. Magnusson had later a one-time guest appearance on Mastermind Himself to the children's series Dizzy Heights.

Together with the singer Bjork was Magnusson of the best known in the UK Icelanders. His eldest daughter Sally Magnusson is also active as a presenter in Scotland. In October 2006, Magnusson was diagnosed with cancer and died on 7 January 2007 to the consequences of this disease.
