Mahindra & Mahindra Limited (abbreviated M & M) is a part of the Mahindra Group, an Indian automobile manufacturer with headquarters in India.

Activities

M & M has the following work areas:

  • Automotive Division: The factories in Mumbai, Nashik, Igatpuri and Zaheerabad produce pickup trucks, light commercial vehicles and three-wheeler.
  • Farm Equipment Division: Distributed to the two large factories in Mumbai and Nagpur and the smaller factories in Rudrapur ( Uttarakhand ) and Jaipur, this department mainly manufactures agricultural vehicles like tractors for the farm sector. In recent years, industrial machines are produced.
  • Mahindra Defence Systems (MDS ): located in New Delhi MDS works for fifty years in the development and manufacture of bulletproof vehicles for the Indian government.

M & M employs around 11,600 people and has eight production facilities, which cover an area of ​​500,000 m². The company has 49 sales offices that are supported by a network of over 760 retailers across India.

History

The company was founded on October 2, 1945 under the name of Mahindra & Mohammed by brothers KC Mahindra and JC together with the late Pakistani Governor General Ghulam Mohammed. With the appointment of Ghulam Mohammed to the Pakistani Minister of Finance, it was renamed Mahindra & Mahindra Limited. M & M started with the trade of steel and in 1947, first successes came with a trading volume of 200 tons of galvanized steel, which led to the establishment of the M & M Steel Division. In October 1947, the first CJ Jeeps from Willys -Overland were imported to India and in 1949 began with the assembly of imported parts jeeps from Willys -Overland.

In 1954 came the end of the license agreement with Kaiser- Jeep and American Motors for the joint production of Jeep models in India. As early as 1962 was the Indian production quota of parts 70% of the jeeps and 55 acres of land were purchased at Kandivli (Mumbai, Maharashtra ) to centralize the production. In 1965, with the production of the FC started 150 gasoline trucks and in 1967 expanded to several model variants. At this time 97 % of the parts of M & M have been self made ​​. 1969-1970 began with the export of vehicles and 1974 to further cooperation with the Jeep brand contract, which was already owned by AMC, Detroit at that time. In 1979 it came to the agreement for cooperation with Peugeot in the diesel engine sector, from which the diesel engine results in the Mahindra models. Now the company produces not only passenger cars, tractors, buses, machine tools, electronic controls, and more.

In the 1980s, the Mahindra SUV was first assembled under license by other companies. Thus, the first foreign assembly in Tehran was at the Pars Khodro. There, the model was, however, marketed under the name Tosan Jeep Commander and succeeds the jeep Shahbaz. In the early 1990s, the model was then manufactured in Saxony Werdau under license. Since 2010, however, rolled up at the Bavarian Auto Group in Egypt, the Mahindra Scorpio from the tape. In addition, there was at the same time a joint venture with Renault. Below you had the Logan placed under the dual brand name as Mahindra Renault.

In 2011, M & M acquired 70% of the South Korean car manufacturer SsangYong.
