Marc'Antonio Pasqualini

Marc'Antonio Pasqualini ( signature: MAP ), ( born April 25, 1614 Rome, † July 2, 1691 in Rome) was an Italian composer of the Baroque and neuter and was regarded as one of the leading male sopranos of his time.

Life

Pasqualini was the son of a barber and was incorporated in 1623 as a singer in the choir of San Louis of the French Church under Vincenzo Ugolini. Under the patronage of Cardinal Antonio Barberini, he became in 1630 a member of the choir of the Sistine Chapel, but also sang in the following years as the protagonist in operas, among others by Stefano Landi, Marco Marazzoli and Virgilio Mazzocchi, whose performances were organized by members of the Barberini family in the Palazzo Barberini and the Teatro delle Quattro Fontane. Among his supporters was Pope Urban VIII.

Pasqualini had a homosexual relationship for seven years older Cardinal Antonio Barberini (1607-1671), who transferred his musical obsession not only for the singer Leonora Baroni, whom he had married in 1640 with his private secretary Castellani on him. Also Stendhal reported it in his Chroniques Italiennes still in the Nineteenth Century. At the invitation of Cardinal Jules Mazarin in 1647 he sang the role of Luigi Rossi's Orfeo in Aristeo in Paris, the castrato Atto Melani had significantly younger here the title role. Henceforth Pasqualini departed again singing in the choir of the Sistine back, which he headed from 1655 and from 1659 he finally said goodbye to life by a papal pension the next thirty years. Contemporaries André Maugars and Atto Melani wrote highly of him, Claudio Monteverdi had registered on the register the young singer already in 1628 and described his voice as qualche gorgietta e qualche trillo, ma il tutto con una certa pronunciato voce alquanto ottussa. The Englishman John Evelyn recommended by his Grand Tour to his compatriots Pasqualini as the best soprano in the continent.
