Marciana Marina
Marciana Marina is a municipality on the island of Elba, with 1975 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It belongs to the province of Livorno in Tuscany.
Geography
The seaside resort and fishing village situated on the northwest coast of the island of Elba. The place is at the same time an independent municipality surrounded by the municipality of Marciana, to which the village belonged to independence in 1951. The municipality has no further fractions ( districts ) and is geographically the smallest municipality of Tuscany. Marciana Marina is located at the foot of Monte Capanne massif, in the foothills located einschmiegt the place. The two mountain villages of Poggio and Marciana act as once a sentinel in about 330-375 meters above sea level amidst extensive chestnut forests.
History
The place was originally built as a port for the fortified mountain villages Poggio and Marciana. As pirate attacks abated end of the 17th century, the site experienced a first boom. In 1884 he was raised to the independent community.
Traffic
The place can be reached from the east ( Portoferraio Procchio ) coming via the coastal road that leads around Elba, the provincial road 25 The further west road crosses the mountain villages of Poggio and Marciana. The ATL bus runs regularly here. Parking can be a bit on the outskirts of the village. The parking spaces on the promenade are chargeable and highly sought after.

Marciana Marina is generally worth seeing because of its location in a bay on the west side of the island.
The waterfront
Marciana Marina as a former fishing village with a port facility is located directly by the sea along the 850 m long bay. It is located directly on the shore you will find the waterfront, ranging from Cotone in the east to la Fenicia in the west and forms the central focus for the tourist and business life. Many shops and cafes offer variety with very nice views.
The Pisan tower
At the western end of the bay is the built in the 12th century Pisan tower Torre dei APPIANI at which the quay wall adjoins that protects the harbor from waves. The tower was already marked on a map of Cristoforo Buondelmonti from 1420 as Torre di Marciana. Other common names are Torre Medicean or Saracen.
La Fenicia
Immediately south of the Pisan tower joins a to two beaches Marciana Marina, the coarse gravel beach la Fenicia. Close to Restaurants and the azure sea will make your stay very pleasant.
Vicinato lungo
The second beach (gravel ) begins at the western end of the beach promenade ( Vicinato lungo ) and extends until the Cotone. Here numerous cafes, restaurants and grocery stores are located.
Chiesa Santa Chiara
Directly behind this row of houses we find the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele (also Piazza della Chiesa ) with the church of Santa Chiara, which was named after the patron saint of the town and built in 1776 in place of a smaller church. Here also the numerous and mostly atmospheric festivities of the place will take place. Every year on August 12 the statue of the saint is brought to the port in a solemn procession.
Cotone
Cotone is the oldest part of the town. The houses were built on and to the local rocks, the district gave its name ( Cotone = large rocks ). Here you will find a tiny harbor, in the really only fits a fishing boat, as well as romantic streets and characters of almost past fishing. A wonderful view over Marciana Marina offers himself while sunbathing on the rocks walk.
Tourism and shopping
Marciana Marina is a popular tourist destination for holidaymakers and holiday home hotel residents. Campsites are not available.
The place has all the necessary facilities like post office, banks with ATMs, Conad supermarket, small grocery stores, a bakery, butcher, pharmacy, wine shops and numerous restaurants and bars. A marina is also available as an attachment point for regular daily excursion boats. A beach life was only recorded to the already mentioned two pebble and gravel beaches.
