Marita Payne

Marita Payne- Wiggins (nee Payne, born October 7, 1960, Barbados) is a former Canadian sprinter Barbadian origin, who had their greatest success in the 400 -meter run.

At the Pan American Games in 1979 in San Juan, she was seventh in the 400m and won with the Canadian team in the 4 x 400 - meter relay bronze.

In 1982, she reached at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane in the 400m semi-final and took with the Canadian team in the 4 x 100 meters relay silver. The following year she won the 200m silver medal at the Universiade and was at the World Athletics Championships 1983 in Helsinki Fifth over 400 m. They also occupied there with the Canadian 4-by- 400-meter relay and the fourth with the 4 x 100 -meter relay race in fifth place.

The highlight of her career she experienced at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. As a final leg she led the Canadian 4-by- 400-meter relay, together with Charmaine Crooks, Jillian Richardson, Molly Killingbeck to the silver medal. Another medal she won in the 4 x 100 - meter relay. The Canadian team finished in the lineup Angela Bailey, Marita Payne- Wiggins, Angella Taylor and France Gareau also the second place. In both cases, the Canadians had to be only beaten the U.S. relay races. In addition, Payne was in the 400 - meter race in fourth. At the World Championships in Rome Payne- Wiggins finished with the 4 x 400 -meter relay as four years earlier fourth place. About 400 m they failed in the semifinal round. The same fate overtook them at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. With the 4 x 400 -meter relay race, however, she stood again in the final. However, Canadian team did not reach the target there.

1981 and 1984 she was Canadian champion and starting for the Florida State University in 1982 and 1984 NCAA champion.

Marita Payne- Wiggins attended Florida State University and is married to former NBA player Mitchell Wiggins.
