Markus Ryffel

Markus Ryffel ( born February 5, 1955 in Bern ) is a former Swiss long-distance runner.

He won at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, the silver medal in the 5,000 -meter run ( 13:07,54 min), after he had already finished fifth at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow over the same distance.

At the European Athletics Championships in 1978, he finished second in the 5000 -meter run ( 13:28,66 min). In the same year he was elected to the Swiss Sportsman of the Year.

From Indoor Championships resulted in two gold, one silver and one bronze medal. He was also third at the 1979 World Cup in Montreal. He is a 19 - time Swiss champion and still holds the Swiss Records over 3000 and 5000 meters.

Even with road races he has been extremely successful. He won nine times and Others at Murten run four times at the Grand Prix of Bern, three times the Greifenseelauf, twice the Zurich New Year's run and once each in the 25 km from Berlin and Basel City Run.

Markus Ryffels son Christoph Ryffel is also successful as a runner, he is one of the long-distance and cross-country running to the Swiss elite.
