Martyn Irvine

Martyn Irvine ( born June 6, 1985 in Newtonards ) is an Irish rail and road racing cyclist, who is from Northern Ireland.

Sports career

Irvine won a stage in 2006 at Ras Connachta and was third overall. As of August, he then drove team for the Irish Sean Kelly. The next year he won a stage at the Tour of Ulster and took the podium at the Irish U23 Championship. In the 2008 season Irvine drove for the Continental team Pezula Racing, where he won the first stage in the Portaferry 3 Days. Next season he was first overall in the Irish Sea Tour of the North, and he won each a section at the Tour of Ulster and in the Suir Valley 3 Days. He was also runner-up in 2009 Irish in the time trial and the Track Cycling World Cup in Cali, he finished with the national team to sixth place in the team pursuit.

At the Olympic London 2012 Irvine launched in Omnium and was ranked 13th At the UCI Track World Championships 2013 in Minsk Irvine won the silver medal in the individual pursuit and became world champion in Scratch. Both races were held on the same day within a short time; after the individual pursuit Irvine had just time for the ceremony, then he changed his bike and started 20 minutes later in Scratch. He is the first male athlete from Ireland for 116 years, which won medals in track cycling.

2013 Irvine was honored as Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year.
