Mayaguana

Mayaguana is the most easterly island in the Bahamas and one of only two islands, which have retained their original arawakischen name.

The largest settlement is Abraham 's Bay on the south coast, other settlements are Betsy Bay and Pirate 's Well in the east to the north.

In Mayaguana there were no major economic development, the island was settled around 1812 by residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The population was 259 Mayaguana to the census in 2000. The estimate for 2010 is 312

The Brazilian historian Antonio Varnhagen suspected in 1824 that Mayaguana Guanahani is the first island that was visited by Christopher Columbus in the discovery of America. This theory found few followers.
