Mellor (Greater Manchester)

Mellor is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. It is situated between Marple Bridge and New Mills on a tributary of the River Goyt. By 1936, Mellor was one of Derbyshire, but was then charged to the district of Marple and thus a part of Cheshire. Due to the formation of Greater Manchester Mellor was part of the Administrative District of Stockport.

Geography

Mellor is located in the foothills of the Pennines on the border with the county of High Peak. The local Church Mellor Church Mellor and Hall are on a hill, which are separated by a small valley from the rest of the community.

Mellor sits on a sandstone layer of the Peak District National Park, also known as the Dark Peak, in contrast to the limestone of the White Peak region. Both layers are part of the Carboniferous era. A special feature in Mellor the absence of iodine, which is not to be found in the river Goyt. This lack led to an earlier enlargement of the thyroid known as goiter or " Derbyshire Neck".

History

The story of Mellor can be traced back to the Anglo-Saxons in the Middle Ages reconstruct. The church was built circa 1330 and houses the oldest pulpit Britain.

During the Industrial Revolution, the Roman lakes were on the other side of the river Goyt created that a water reservoir for Samuel Oldknows cotton mill was (also called Mellor Mill ). At the height of industrialization, hydropower was replaced by coal and discovered in Mellor Steinkohlflöze used to fire the kilns.

Policy

Traditionally strong in Mellor parties are the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats. Although in Mellor barely policy is conducted, there are still at each election a high turnout.
