Metropolitan Borough of Bolton

Bolton is a metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester in England. Administrative center is the city of Bolton, in around half of the population lives. Other important towns in the Borough are Blackrod, Farnworth, Horwich, Kearsley, Little Lever, South Turton and Westhoughton.

The reorganization of the limits and the capabilities of local authorities led in 1974 to form the Metropolitan Borough. Were fused while the Bolton County Borough, Municipal Borough of Farnworth, the. Urban Districts Blackrod, Horwich, Kearsley, Little Lever and Westhoughton and the southern part of the Turton Urban District These authorities previously belonged to the county of Lancashire.

1986 Bolton was in fact a Unitary Authority, as the central government dissolved the overall management of Greater Manchester. Bolton remained for ceremonial purposes part of Greater Manchester, as well as for individual higher-level tasks such as police, fire and public transport.

Bolton is twinned with Paderborn ( Nordrhein-Westfalen) and Le Mans ( France).
