Michael P. Anderson

Michael Philip Anderson ( born December 25, 1959 in Plattsburgh, New York, USA; † 1 February 2003 on the south of the United States ) was an American astronaut.

Career

Anderson graduated in 1977 Cheney High School in Cheney (Washington ) from 1981 and attained a Bachelor's degree in physics and astronomy at the University of Washington. After joining the United States Air Force (USAF ), he served as the pilot instructor and as an aircraft commander and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. 1990 Anderson gained his master's degree in physics from Creighton University in Nebraska. During his time in the USAF, he completed more than 3,000 flight hours.

In December 1994, Anderson was selected by NASA for the astronaut program and qualified after a year's training as a mission specialist. With a total of two space flights, he spent over 24 days in Earth orbit.

On 1 February 2003, Anderson and the other six astronauts were the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia in returning to Earth killed when the shuttle broke up into about 60 km altitude. Anderson left a wife and two children. His grave is located on the Arlington National Cemetery.

Astronauts activity

  • STS -89 Endeavour ( January 23 to 31 1998): Anderson served as a mission specialist on the eighth Shuttle -Mir mission. An object of the mission was to share the on-board the Mir U.S. astronauts David A. Wolf against Andrew SW Thomas. In addition, scientific equipment and supplies were brought to me.
  • STS- 107 Columbia ( January 16 to February 1 2003): Use as payload commander on the 113th space shuttle mission. On this 16-day research mission about 80 scientific experiments were carried out. When re-entering the Earth's atmosphere, 16 minutes before the scheduled landing, the Columbia broke up as a result of damage to the heat shield. All seven astronauts were killed.
