Michalovce

Michalovce ( Slovak to 1927 " Michalovce "; German Michalovce, Hungarian Nagymihály ) is a town in the far east of Slovakia, near the border with Ukraine.

It has around 40,000 inhabitants and is the capital of Okres Michalovce.

History

It was first mentioned in writing in 1244. Until 1918, the town belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia.

Location

The city lies on the River Laborec the north of the East Slovak Lowland about 50 kilometers east of Kosice, the center of Eastern Slovakia. Administratively, Michalovce part of the Košice Region. The region is one of the warmest Slovakia and has up to 2200 hours of sunshine per year, with an average annual temperature of 9-10 ° C. Since 1966, located east of the city of reservoir Zemplínska šírava.

Attractions

The city center has a few old building mass, but - like many cities in the eastern Slovakia - a large central square, which is designed as a leisure and shopping center. In the West Michalovces, on the main road to Kosice, several industries are located.

A very beautiful building is the castle with surrounding park on the banks of the Laborec. It was built as a rectangular Renaissance building with open arcades in the 17th century, on the site of an older structure ( probably a frequently mentioned castle ). The castle was later rebuilt several times. Today it houses a museum.

Next to the castle is a Catholic Baroque pilgrimage church from the 14th - 15th Century. There are also two Greek Catholic churches from 1772 ( Rococo ) and 1931-34 ( neobyzantinischer style).

On the hill Hrádok is the mausoleum of the Sztáray family, which was built as a free replica of Michael's church in Košice in neo-Gothic style 1893-1898,

Environment

Within a radius of Michalovce, the East Slovak Lowland, which lies in the altitude of a few meters above the Ostpannonischen level into which it passes 50 km south spreads. The Laborec and the other rivers ( Latorica, Topľa and Ondava ) drain south into the Bodrog and the nearby river Tisza and some are accompanied by lowland forest.

To the region the districts Trebišov, Michalovce and Sobrance, and in the north the mountains Slanské Hills and Vihorlat include ( 1 076 m).

Just across the border with Ukraine, which is about 40 km away, the university city of Uzhhorod is located (see also History of the Carpatho - Ukraine).

Geology and Nature

The geological underground in the northern part of the lowland form on the middle reaches of the tertiary and quaternary deposits Laborec. From the fertile plains ( altitude about 110 - 115m ) project two low, wooded hills, the Hrádok (163 m) and the larger Biela hora (159 m). Your geology is characterized by splitting and sandstone.

The city is located in the plane near the Zemplínska šírava (11 x 3 km ), a large lake and the center of local tourism. It was built until 1966 at the southern slope of the Biela hora; then it developed into a center for recreation and sport. The lake is heavily frequented by tourists. Its eastern part is a bird sanctuary with an ornithological station. Due to the convenient location and the very mild continental climate in the summer - it corresponds approximately to that of Pannonia - is winegrowing in the area of the reservoir.

The Hockey HK Dukla Michalovce plays in the second-rate 1 Hockey League. The women's handball club IUVENTA Michalovce participates in the Women Handball League. Other clubs from the village are the MFK Zemplín Michalovce, ŠK Zemplín Judo Michalovce, 1 BK Michalovce and HC Winland Michalovce.
