Michiyo Yagi

Michiyo Yagi (Japanese八 木 美 知 依, Yagi Michiyo; * 1962 in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture) is a Japanese koto player that has emerged in Europe, especially in the field of contemporary improvised music.

Work

Yagi learned the Japanese zither instrument since the age of six. After she had completed a first study on the Aichi Junior College, she enrolled in the courses of NHK, to be trained up to the exam in 1986 lower than in Tadao Sawai Kotospielerin, Kazue Sawai and Satomi Kurauchi. With the Sawai Tadao ensemble, she played the CD Koto (1988 ), which was awarded by the Japanese government. In 1989 and 1990 she was a visiting professor at Wesleyan University, where she performed numerous modern compositions for the koto. Also, she worked with contemporary composers such as John Cage and John Zorn. In 1999, she released her solo album Shizuku on the Tzadik label. In 2001 she took the koto ensemble Paulownia Crush, with on Russia tour, the album was Yural for East Works 2004. With the group Kokoo they took rock track on traditional Japanese instruments; with Sachiko M belonged to the avant - pop band Hoahio. Furthermore, she took on with the pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki.

Internationally, it has performed at festivals such as the Vision Festival and the Bang -on-a -Can Festival in New York, the Moers Festival, the Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville and at the Tokyo Summer. With John Zorn, Bill Laswell and drummer Hideo Yamaki she played in Japan in 2002. In 2006, she put together with Haker Flaten and Paal Nilssen Ingebrigt -Love, with whom she toured in Europe, the album Live! at Super Deluxe ( idiolect / Bomba ) ago. With Peter Brötzmann and Nilssen -Love it forms a trio ( Head On, idiolect, 2008). The Unlimited Festival in Wels, she performed with Brötzmann Chicago Tentet and played a concert for Fukushima; there she also performed with Okkyung Lee and Xu Fengxia (Long Story Short ). Furthermore, she played with musicians such as Mark Dresser, Akira Sakata, Fred Frith, Chris Cutler, Yoshihide Otomo, Saadet Türköz, Ned Rothenberg, Lauren Newton, Hans Reichel, Mino Cinelu, Satoko Fujii, Joëlle Léandre, Kazutoki Umezu, Carl Stone, Christian Marclay, Zeena Parkins, Masahiko Sato, Billy Bang, Keiji Haino or Jason Roebke.
