History

On April 2, 1968, the Storting decided to build an airport. The airport was opened in 1972 and operated by the local municipality. Due to financial losses since 1978, the airport is managed and operated by the Norwegian State. A new passenger terminal was opened in the early 1990s. 2005, the airport received an international status and has since then held a duty-free shop in the departure area and as of 2006, the terminal area was expanded and created more new aircraft parking areas.
