Momchilgrad

Momchilgrad [ ˌ mɔmtʃiɫ ɡrat ] ( Bulgarian Момчилград ) is a town in southern Bulgaria, Kardzhali in the Oblast, near the cities of Kardzhali and Jebel. Momchilgrad is the second largest city in the oblast Kardzhali.

Location

Momchilgrad located in the southeast of the Rhodope Mountains.

The city lies on the River Warbiza ( Bulg Върбица ) - a tributary of the Arda, which in turn is a tributary of the Maritsa.

History

The place was called (in Turkish; Bulg Местанлъ ) to 1934 Mestanlı or in the Bulgarian ized version Mestanlij ( Мъстанлий ). Since 1937 Momchilgrad is a city.

In the immediate vicinity of Momchilgrad, near the village of Tatul, lies the archaeological site Swetilischto, which is supposed to be the grave of Orpheus.
