Kardzhali

Kardzhali [ kɤrdʒɐli ] ( Кърджали Bulgarian, Turkish Kircaali ) is a city of about 45,000 inhabitants in southern Bulgaria. It is the administrative center of a municipality and the Oblast Kardzhali.

Location

Kardzhali is located in the Eastern Rhodopes, 259 km southeast of Sofia and 90 km south of Plovdiv.

In the city there is a great historical museum with 4000 exhibits, 179 archaeological objects ( of which 19 are prehistoric, ancient 122 and 37 from the Middle Ages ), a musical theater and a puppet theater.

Near the town is the Kardzhali Reservoir, where the Arda is jammed. Recently perch were exposed from the Owtschariza reservoir. 30 years ago, 45,000 carp have already been exposed.

Near the city is Momchilgrad ( Bulg: Момчилград ). Until the city of Haskovo is 50 km away.

History

The city was already inhabited in ancient times. The first traces of more than 3,000 years of history left by the Thracians, as they settled in the area. From this time and not far from Kardzhali is one of the most important places of worship of antiquity, Perperikon. Even after the Christianization of the region remained Perperikon important religious center.

After the Thracians were followed by the Greeks, Persians, Byzantines, Slavs, Bulgarians, Crusaders and Ottomans. In the Middle Ages the center of Kardzhali Province Achridos. In Sweti Joan prodrome monastery was the center of one of the largest Christian Orthodox eparchy of the Middle Ages. Not far from Kardzhali, about 6 km there is the fortress Wischegrad, near which in 1206 was crowned Henry of Flanders to Latin emperor.

1362, the region was conquered by the Ottomans, while all the great fortresses of the region were burned and destroyed. During the Ottoman period, the city was rebuilt and given the name Kircaali.
