Monticello AVA

Monticello AVA ( recognized since 23 January 1984) is an American Viticultural Area in the U.S. state of Virginia. The area is located in the administrative regions Albemarle County, Greene County, Orange County and Nelson County. The American Viticultural Area (AVA ) is located in the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The protected designation of origin has been recognized by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Of the nearly 30 known grape varieties Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Viognier are the most important. However, many attempts are made to find the most appropriate varieties and locations through the still young history of wine yet.

History

First records for viticulture in the region date back to the late 1780s when Thomas Jefferson the Italians Phillip Mazzei entrusted with the task of the winemaker. The first experiments with mainly Italian grape varieties, however, were not very successful. Up to the time of Prohibition there was a modest wine-growing in the region, which was only revived again in the 1970s.

In particular, the Italian Zonin family contacted the winery Barboursville Vineyards in Orange County new impetus.
