Montjay, Saône-et-Loire

Montjay is a commune in the Saône -et -Loire, in Burgundy; it belongs to the district Louhans, for Canton Pierre -de- Bresse. The municipality belongs since July 2011 at the Association of Municipalities of Saint- Germain -du -Bois. The village has 191 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).

Geography

The municipality is located in the Bresse region on the banks of the Brenne, a right tributary of the seille ( Saône ). The municipality is located in the southeast of Canton Pierre -de- Bresse and therefore closer to the cantonal capital of Saint- Germain -du -Bois. To the municipality following the hamlet include Arbois, Chancelle, Chapuis, Chardenière, Chaudenard, Etang- Touley, Grange- Bernard, Haut-de- Montjay, Ile, Merlin, Moth, Mouilles, Parets, Picard, Plateaux, Ponce, Rabottière, Reppe.

Etymology

The name probably derives from mons Gaudii (Mount of Joy). This name was given in the book Jakob Monte do Gozo, the point on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, where the desired goal becomes visible for the first time. Derivatives of mons Gaudii or mont de joie have often led to designations for place names or hamlets in France.

History

Canon law Montjay was the parish of La Chaux belonging. In the hamlet Les Plateaux was a castle that belonged since 1587 to the family of Green. At the hamlet of L' Isle is a deep pond, called le Gour, in the vicinity wall remains were found. Supposedly was here the old castle, of which it is told, every year on Christmas night was listening to the tinkling of the old bell tower in Gour.

Infrastructure

Today Montjay is an agricultural center without their own infrastructure or shopping. Only the Mairie ( Municipal House ) and a church (Saint Peter consecrated ) are in place, the community does not have its own school.
