Moorgrund

Moorgrund is a municipality in the district of Wartburg in Thuringia. The unit municipality extends from the Rennsteig in Ruhla up in the Werra valley just outside of the town of Bad Salzungen.

Geography

Originally made ​​of Moorgrund a large wetland - in the eastern part it was a bog, this was finally down to small remnants harnessed in the 19th century by drainage ditches that were associated with the Moorbach and the pipe trench, for agricultural purposes. At the edges of the valley, there are now also protected regions with calcareous grassland and heathland. The discovered already in early times attracted copper minerals in the Middle Ages to the miners, in a narrow strip of copper Suhl to Schweina are remains of medieval mines in the woods, and iron was found.

History

Today's municipal area was settled in the time of war trains from Franconia. Gumpelstadt as the oldest settlement found 907 first documentary mention.

The community Moorgrund was March 1, 1994 the merger of the municipalities Gumpelstadt, forest and fish Witzelroda. Culture and sights

Historically noteworthy is the place Mohra, here lived the ancestors of Martin Luther as farmers and miners. In Gumpelstadt it houses the local administration, a swimming pool and nature conservation center Old Warth. The town has many monuments. Noteworthy is the former hunting lodge of Kissel Meininger Dukes, it is located near the Rennsteig. A tourist has the meaning Pummpälzweg, it connects the hiking destinations of Moorgrund with the neighboring municipalities, Eisenach and Bad Salzungen. Sports enthusiasts Motocross Square Old Warth was designed back in the 1960s.
