Oechsen

Oechsen is a municipality in the district of Wartburg in Thuringia. It belongs to the administrative community Dermbach, which has its headquarters in the town of Dermbach.

Geography

The community Oechsen located in the center of the Thuringian Rhön, approximately 15 kilometers (air line) west-southwest of the town of Bad Salzungen in the valley of the water Oechse. The highest elevation of the mountain Schorn applies ( 559.1 m above sea level. NN ). The municipality belongs to the district of Lenders; the core community Oechsen has grown together with the place Niederoechsen. June 30, 2009 22 inhabitants lived in the district Lenders.

History

First historical mention was made in the year 977, the oldest forms of the name are: Uhsino, Uhseno, Ussine. The settlement Oechsen was the property of a monastery Rasdorf. In 1166, revenues of the monastery of Fulda were recorded. Around the year 1214 was Count Erpho of Neidhartshausen on the nearby mountain Schorn a castle - built the beautiful castle. According to tradition Erpho should have occupied the mountain illegally, he therefore had to swear an oath to usurp any rights over the peasants of Oechsen. Today, only small traces of the former castle can be seen.

The local situation and especially the St. Lawrence Church were provided with fortifications, the tower served as a defensive tower. Around 1890, potassium salts were opened in the Werra Rhon area. Also in Oechsen in 1911 started the Teufung of two shafts.
