Mörbisch am See ( Hungarian: Fertőmeggyes, Croatian: Merbiš ) is an Austrian municipality with 2288 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) at the Neusiedler lake in northern Burgenland.

Geography

Mörbisch is located in the northern part of Burgenland on the southwestern shore of Lake Neusiedl directly to the Hungarian border and 70 km southeast of Vienna.

The place has a very broad belt of reeds, so that you can reach the lake just a man made dam in 1950. At the end of the dam are the floating stage, the modern seaside resort Mörbisch, the marina, two shipping companies that operate the ferry service to Illmitz, tennis and beach volleyball courts, a sailing and surfing school and a boat rental.

Neighboring communities of Mörbisch are:

  • St. Margaret in the northwest
  • Fertőrákos ( German: Kroisbach; Hungary ) in the south
  • Illmitz ( over the lake) are in the east

Because of its location on Lake Neusiedl prevails mild Pannonian climate.

History

Origin of the name

The name is first mentioned in 1254 as possessio Megyes (literally: " the cherry- rich place " to Hungarian meggy "cherry" ). The first Hungarian-speaking inhabitants named the settlement so either for a present there, eye-catching cherry or after the numerous growing there cherry trees.

This Hungarian form Meggyes was slightly modified later adopted into German as Mörbisch; Croatian form Merbiš is borrowed from the German.

General History

Before Christ's birth, the area was part of the Celtic kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the area of the Celtic hillfort castle on the Schwarzenbacher Castle Hill.

To the west of the village, on the hallway " Salzäcker " is the occurrence of a La Tène cemetery. In agricultural work in 1935, the first discoveries were made and placed in the National Museum of Burgenland in Eisenstadt. This prompted excavations have revealed five graves, 1936, four more discovered. In some graves stone packs were available, the grave 4 a stone stele. At grave goods were found bronze fibulae of various shapes, including a bird's head brooches, chokers eyelet hook closure, iron swords and knives, everything from the Early La Tène. A hollow hump ring indicates a further occupancy until the Mittellatène.

Later, under the Romans then lay today Mörbisch in the province of Pannonia.

Mörbisch was already inhabited 5000 BC. The Romans had settlements here. Immediately to the south of the state and municipal boundary at Mörbisch is to see a Mithrasrelief from the Roman period of Pannonia.

The place was like the rest of Burgenland to 1921 for Hungary, specifically to Sopron County ( Sopron ). After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon 1919 1920 Austria after tough negotiations. The place belonged since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ), in the Nazi era to Lower Austria. Nevertheless, the economy and culture were aligned to 1945 Sopron.

1945-1989 was between Mörbisch and Ödenburg the Iron Curtain, since the border is open again. End of 2007, border controls have been set ( Schengen Agreement ).

Population

In the years 1680 and 1713 raged in Mörbisch the plague and gathered up two-thirds of the population then. In 1849 half of the population died due to a cholera epidemic. Mörbisch counted until the beginning of the 19th century only about 200 inhabitants. The strong increase of the population in the second half of the 19th century gives an indication of the favorable impact of the obtained economic independence of the Hungarian peasants. Regular events

Well known are the Mörbisch. Operettas Austrian composers are on a built in Lake Neusiedl stage played annually in July and August.

The event series ' Music in the Park ', will be presented at the concert recordings on a big screen, takes place annually in the summer instead, as regular guests concerts and performances of folk dance.

Economy and infrastructure

Mörbisch is a traditional wine-growing village with its location in the growing area Neusiedl Hill Country. 500 hectares of vineyards are farmed by 100 growers; served, among other things in the 15 wine tavern taverns of the village.

Mörbisch With about 113,000 overnight stays per year (2005) the largest tourist towns in Burgenland. With the rise of tourism in Burgenland has also benefited Mörbisch; by Mörbisch this effect was exacerbated.

From other Seeanrainergemeinden, especially of Illmitz from the Seewinkel, there are regularly scheduled boat rides ( bike ferry ) to Mörbisch.

1918 consisted of ( unrealized heart) plan, from the station of Raab Oedenburg - Ebenfurter Railway in Sopron ( Sopron ) to build a leading On Morbisch to Rust standard gauge railway.
