Morton is a small town in Lewis County in the mid- southwest of the U.S. state of Washington. In the census in 2010, Morton had 1,126 inhabitants.

Geography

Morton is located at 46 ° 33'28 " north latitude and 122 ° 16'47 " west longitude and extending over 2.7 km ², which consist exclusively of land area.

The village is located around 20 kilometers by road north of the reefs Lake, a reservoir of the Cowlitz River, which flows at Longview (across from Portland, Oregon) in the Columbia River.

Morton is located southwest of Mount Rainier, the highest 4,392 m peaks of the Cascade Range. In the immediate vicinity of Morton Mount Rainier National Park, Snoqualmie National Forest and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest lie to the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.

The nearest towns are Glenoma (11,8 km southwest), Mossyrock (18,6 km west-southwest ), Carlson (18,1 km north-northeast ) and Cinebar (23,2 km west ). The next major cities are Seattle (144 km north) and Portland, Oregon (174 km south-southwest ).

History

1871 came with James Fletcher, the first settlers to the area of the present town. Named the newly created site in 1889 by Levi P. Morton ( 1824-1920 ), 22nd Vice- President of the USA ( 1889-1893 ) was ..

On January 7, 1913 Morton was given the official status of a self-managed community ( Incorporation ). Main sources of income were the logging in the surrounding woods, the harvest of Cascararinde and mining mining of cinnabar ( vermilion ). In the 1950s, Morton has been called " tie mill capital of the world", as in large scale railway sleepers here ( railroad ties ) were manufactured.
