The Noordam is a cruise ship of the Holland America Line. She is the fourth ship, which bears the name Noordam and is thus referred to as Noordam IV.

History

The ship was in 2005 at the Italian shipyard Fincantieri Marghera Keel-laying and handed over to the shipping company in the spring of 2006. On 22 February 2006, the baptism took place by the godmother, the deaf actress Marlee Matlin, held in New York City. From there after launched the maiden cruise to the Caribbean.

The Noordam is a sister ship to Zuiderdam, the Westerdam and Oosterdam. The four ships carrying the Dutch name of the four cardinal points on the compass. The Arcadia, which is also identical in construction, was indeed appointed by the Holland- America Line, but sold to P & O Cruises.

Areas of application

Between spring and autumn the ship on various routes in the Mediterranean is on the way, in the winter season crosses the Noordam from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean.

Drive

The ship is powered by five marine diesel engines in a CODAG arrangement. Three of these engines achieve a power of 16,000 hp, two each 12,000 hp. In addition, a gas turbine with a power output of 18,000 horsepower is available. This results in a total power output of the drive of nearly 90,000 hp ( 66,176 kW). The generated current of these motors is required on the one hand for the two ABB propeller gondolas, each with 23,500 hp, on the other hand also for the rest of board supply. The ship's water treatment plant can produce 1,700 tons of water per day, of which only 750 tons a day are needed. The fuel consumption is per day for 216 tonnes of fuel oil and 90 tonnes of marine diesel oil at maximum load.

Trivia

On the Noordam quite a number of old oil paintings are on display, including a representation of the city of Utrecht in 1842. Moreover, there are images of contemporary art, such as a series of photographs of famous music greats BB King and Dizzy Gillespie. Is a valuable chest of drawers, which is lined with carved pillars from the 17th century on board. This was made ​​in 1885 in Germany and decorated with precious stones and ivory.
