Muir of Ord

Muir of Ord ( Gaelic: Am Blar Dubh ) is a village in the Scottish council area of Highland. It lies about 15 km west-northwest of Inverness and 8 km south of Dingwall west of the Black Isle. In 2001, Muir of Ord recorded 1812 inhabitants.

History

The village developed at the beginning of the 19th century on the site of the hamlet Tarradale. Driving force of development were here the importance of freight to rail and road as well as the establishment of the Glen Ord Whisky Distillery in 1838. Distillers is still active today and is now part of the international group Diageo. The Glen Ord belonging Malthouse also delivers to other distilleries from Diageo.

Traffic

The A9, which connects Edinburgh with Thurso runs, about seven kilometers east of the village and binds Muir of Ord on to the long distance network. Until the Kessock Bridge the A9 from Inverness was about Beauly and Muir of Ord by Dingwall. In addition, Muir of Ord since 1862 has its own railway station, the Far North Line and Kyle of Lochalsh Line operate regularly.
