Šentilj v Slovenskih goricah ( German St. Egidi in Windischbüheln; St. Ilgen ) is a municipality (Slovenian Občina ) in the north- east of Slovenia, on the border with Austria.

Geography

Šentilj located on the northern edge of the Windische Bühel, a range of hills between the Mura and Drava. Its population is 8074 (as of 2002 census ). The municipality covers an area of 65.0 km ², giving a population density of 124.2 inhabitants per km ².

Economy

In Šentilj is the largest border crossing between Austria and Slovenia (border crossing pitch / Šentilj ), but today is an EU and Schengen internal border. History

By Šentilj led in ancient times, the Roman road from Poetovio (today Ptuj ) by Flavia Solva ( near Leibnitz ). In Sladki vrh ancient tombs have been found. In Ceršak even a fortified settlement from prehistoric times with a total of eleven buildings from various periods (Bronze Age, Celts, Romans ) was discovered.

In Štrihovec ( Strichowetz ) were settled in the early 20th century planned Protestant immigrants from Württemberg, but were expelled after the Second World War in 1945 from the former Yugoslavia.

Attractions

In Šentilj especially the originally medieval, 1806 in the classical style newly built parish church of St. Egidi is worth seeing.

In the municipality of Šentilj are also two castles, of which the lower situated castle Mureck (Slovenian Cmurek ) was first mentioned in the year 1151.
