Forests of the highlands in the north-western slopes of Mount Kaputar

The Nandewar Range is a mountainous country, which lies about 30 km east of Narrabri in New South Wales in Australia. The mountain range was formed by volcanic activity.

Location

The Nandewar Range is located about 400 km north of Sydney and 210 km west of the coast of the Tasman Sea.

In the east the Nandewar Range is a part of the Great Dividing Range, which takes its starting point south of Uralla and extending over the Northern Tablelands of New England, where it is flat and hilly. At the western end of the hill country is mountainous and reaches the Mount Kaputar formed from volcanoes its greatest height 1510 meters. This mountain is located in Mount Kaputar National Park.

The Nandewar Range is the watershed between the catchment areas of Namoi River and Gwydir River, drain the large areas. The Macdonald River rises near Walcha and flows into the Warrabah National Park, where it is called Namoi River and further into the Manilla River, Peel River and Mooki River. The Horton River flows north into the Gwydir River.

As far as the site of the Nandewar Range is flat and hilly, it is used for grain cultivation and grassland as economically and the higher elevations are partially wooded. High mountains in winter are partly covered with snow.

History

The traditional owners of this area were the Aborigines of the Kamilaroi. The first Europeans who invaded this area was John Oxley in 1818. Was succeeded in 1825 the botanist Allan Cunningham and after an expedition of Thomas Livingstone Mitchell began in 1834, the European colonization of the area.

Geology

The mountain consists of basalt and was due to volcanic activity before 21-17 million years ago. This shield volcanoes were formed which erordierten the passage of time and the volcanic region formed in their Lavaterrassen, lava pillars and dikes.

In the mountain area of 800 km ² next basalts also occur trachytes and rhyolites. The basalts reach the Bullawa Creek to Mount Kaputar a thickness of 800 meters.
