National Gallery of Slovenia
The Slovenian National Gallery (Slovenian: Narodna galerija Slovenije ) is an art museum especially for paintings and sculptures in the Prešernova Cesta 20 ( one named after the Slovene national poet France Prešeren road ) the Slovenian capital Ljubljana.
History
The building which houses the National Gallery is currently housed, was built in 1896 according to plans of coming from Prague architect František Edmund Škabrout as " Narodni dom" ( " People's House "). The appearance of the building is similar to that of the Prague National Theatre. It served as a venue different Slovenian clubs, on the ground floor there was the gymnasium of the Sokol Club. The facade is decorated in neo-Renaissance style. In 1993 the building was expanded to include a built according to the plans of the Slovene architect Edvard Ravnikar in the postmodern style wings. The two buildings were joined together in 2001 by a glass tract and an entrance hall, designed by architect Jurij Sadar and Bostjan Vuga office.
The initiative for the establishment of the collection dates back to Ivan Hribar, who was 1896-1910 Mayor of the then of Ljubljana and Ljubljana today, as well as the writer and historian Peter von Radics. 1918 is regarded as the official establishment of the entity. The collection was first in several rooms in Kresijska palača ( "Circle Palace ", a neo-baroque imperial administration building ) housed and moved 1925 rooms in the present building. 1946, the collection was nationalized.
Collection
The focus of the collection comprises Slovenian painting and sculpture from the Middle Ages to the present, to paintings from all over Europe.
