Neftchi Baku PFK

The Neftçi Peşəkar Futbol Klubu, even after the Russian transcription Neftschi Baku (Russian Нефтчи Баку ), is a football club based in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan.

History

The club was founded in 1937 under the name Neftjanik and received its present name in 1968, at that time, however, still in Cyrillic lettering. In the Soviet Union was the club 's most successful Azerbaijani club Neftchi spent a total of 27 seasons in the first division. However, a title could never be won, a third place in 1966 was the biggest success. 1988 rose Neftçi for the last time in the history of Soviet league now and the time spent until 1991 in Perwaja league. When the Soviet Union, and with it their leagues were dissolved, the Azerbaijani Premyer Liqasi was founded. In this new, national league Neftçi was one of the dominant clubs. The club won the 1992, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2011 and 2012 the Azerbaijani championship. Another major success was winning the 2006 CIS Cup.

2012/13 started the club as a master in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. After one could eliminate the FC Zestaponi (2nd qualifying round), would retire against Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona from the third qualifying round. In the relegation to the Europa League Baku had a sensational, as APOEL Nicosia, last year 's quarter-finalists of the Champions League, could be eliminated. Baku is the first Azerbaijani team that participates in the group stage of the Europa League and is also the first Azerbaijani team that participates in the group stage of a UEFA club competition. Furthermore Neftçi is also the first Azerbaijani club to qualify for the group stage of the European Cup competition.
