Gallo -Roman tombs and a small Roman villa show agricultural colonization during the 2nd century AD The region was used primarily as a hunting ground in the Carolingian period and remained sparsely settled during the Middle Ages. A document from 1100 shows that one of the many small hamlets in the area, Semel, to the abbey of Amdain ( now Saint- Hubert ) was given away. In 1239 the same village was part of the lordship Neufchâteau and was given away at the same time to the abbey of Orval. Like many of its neighboring areas was the reign of Neufchâteau part of the Duchy of Luxembourg, within the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation.
