New Providence

New Providence ( engl. New Providence ) is an island in the Bahamas and is located in the North Atlantic Ocean between Andros and Eleuthera in the southwest to the northeast. The highest elevation is the Bennet 's Hill.

Geography

On New Providence, which also often Paradise Iceland is counted, there is Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. The island has an area of 207 km ². Of the 306 611 inhabitants of the Bahamas in 2000, 69.9 % lived in New Providence, which corresponds to 214 321 inhabitants.

History

In the 17th century, the island was home to the Pirates, who went from here to privateering. 2000 men lived in the harbor and in the board built on land laws and there were none. The island was so well fortified that they safely protected its inhabitants from pursuers; from the hinterland could procure enough food. During the American Revolutionary War, New Providence 1776 was the scene of the first overseas deployment of the Continental Marines.

Economy

New Providence serves as the headquarters of more than 400 banks and trust companies. Other settlements next to Nassau are Grants Town, Bain Town, Fox Hill, Adelaide, Yamacraw, South Beach, Coral Harbour, Lyford Cay, Paradise Iceland, Sea Breeze, Centre Ville, The Grove (south) and The Grove (West Bay ), Cable Beach, Delaporte, Gambier and Love Beach.
