Newcastle (English Newcastle Local Municipality ) is a town in South Africa's District Amajuba and the third largest urban center in the province of KwaZulu -Natal. The administrative center of the municipality is located in the city of Newcastle. Aszul Rehman is the mayor. The ANC represents the majority in the City Council.

The namesake of the municipality and the city was the Duke of Newcastle, biritischer State for the Colonies. The municipality covers an area of 1855 square kilometers. 2007, the municipality had 327 637 inhabitants according to projections.

Geography

Newcastle is the largest of three towns in the district. It lies in the northwest of the province on Ncandu River at the foot of the Drakensberg. To the north it borders the province of Mpumalanga and on the northeast by eMadlangeni. South of Newcastle is Dannhauser and west of the Free State Province.

In the town there are two cities: Newcastle and Madadeni. Other places are equal ball, Charlestown, Ingogo, Normandy and Osizweni.
