Nicholas Chia

Nicholas Chia Yeck Joo (Chinese谢益裕, Pinyin Yiyu Xie ) ( born April 8, 1938 in Singapore) is Archbishop Emeritus of Singapore.

Life

Nicholas Chia studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminary in Singapore and Penang, Malaysia. He received on 26 January 1964, the ordination of the former Archdiocese of Malacca- Singapore. From 1969 to 1971 he studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. From 1978 to 1990 he was director of the "Singapore Pastoral Institute ".

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 15 May 2001 to the Archbishop of Singapore. He received his episcopal consecration on 7 October 2001, the then Apostolic Delegate in Singapore, Archbishop Adriano Bernardini; Co-consecrators were his predecessor Archbishop Gregory Yong Sooi Ngean and Anthony Soter Fernandez, Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur. His motto is Omnia Omnibus ( " Allen everything ").

From March 2002 to 2005 he was a member of the Council of the " International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services" and represents this central and eastern Asia.

On May 20, 2013 Pope Francis took his on the grounds of age pre- mounted resignation.
