Niki Reiser

Niki Reiser (born 12 May 1958, in Aargau ) is a Swiss musician and (music ) composer.

Niki Reiser is one of the most famous film composer of the German-speaking world. His debut as a film composer was the music for you and me ( 1986) by Dani Levy, for whose films he wrote all the music to this day.

Life

Niki Reiser was born in 1958 in Aargau in Switzerland, the son of a nurse and a pastor. Before he moved with twelve years to Basel, where he lives since he spent four years in Schaffhausen. In addition to classic lessons on the flute as a child, he invented his own melodies on the piano. In his youth he played in various bands, wrote the pieces set to music and theatrical performances at the school.

In the 1970s, Reiser studied classical music with an emphasis flute in Basel. From 1980 to 1984 he studied in Boston at the Berklee School of Music jazz and classical music with a focus on film music. 1984-1986 Reiser was partially in Europe, especially in Switzerland, where he deepened his studies in composition in Basel. Workshops in USA Ennio Morricone and he learned Jerry Goldsmith know. In this time he composed his first pieces in the USA for some movies. During this time he also toured as a jazz flutist with the Ensemble People, which he himself had co-founded.

In 1986 he moved Reiser back to Europe, where he met the director Dani Levy and for the first movie You also composed the music myself. The film was a surprising success throughout Europe and was nominated in 1987 at the International Film Festival in Cannes for the Golden Palm. At this time, Reiser joined the Klezmer band as a flutist at Kol Simcha, and composed some pieces. With the band he was in the period from 1991 to 1993 and from 1997 to 1999 twice on a world tour, where they performed, among others, at Carnegie Hall and at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Reiser decided only to write film music. Besides working with Levy, he has composed for Caroline Link, whom he met in 1996 for the first time. With the music for their first film, Beyond Silence, he had his breakthrough. For her film Nowhere in Africa Reiser studied African music for some time in Nairobi. Today he has his music studio in Basel in the Gundeldinger field.

Reiser is on the board of the German Film Academy since its founding in 2003.
