Noric Alps

P1F1

Noric Alps is a collective term for parts of the Eastern Alps, with very different concepts. It is found in various historic Alpine divisions, but also used outside of Germany until today.

Alpes Noricae Roman times

The term Noric Alps (Alpes Noricae ) comes from the Roman times, and referred to the mountains of the province of Noricum in Tyrol and Bavaria ( in the broad sense of the later to become baierischen tribal territory).

Historical Concept of the 19th century

The term was coined in the 19th century for a tripartite division of the Eastern Alps in Noric Alps, Carnic Alps (A. Carnicae ) and Julian (A. Juliae ) or Carniolan Alps used. Here, these three groups extend over the following mountain groups, as they are today Alpine Club classification of the Eastern Alps (AVE ):

  • The Juliae from Triglav (old: Terglu ) up to the Dinaric Alps ( Dinarides ) - the current term corresponds to the Julian Alps still largely
  • The Carnicae along the Drava to the Save ( old: Sau ) - these are the modern Carnic Alps ( which are then still known as karni shear main ridge ), the Gail Valley Alps, Karavanke Steiner Alpen ( Kamniske or Savinjske Alps, Save Alps ') and the Pohorje ( Pohorje )
  • And the Noricae the whole area from the Danube to the Drau (the present-day eastern North and Central Alps, where at that time the western border of the Eastern Alps was seen at the Dreiherrenspitze ).

The classic division of the Noric Alps took place in:

  • Austrian Alps ( Upper and Lower Austrian Alps including the Vienna Woods )
  • Salzburg Alps including Salzkammergut Alps
  • Styrian Alps (Styria and Carinthia )
  • Trento territory Alps (eastern Trento )

Outdated concept in German-speaking

Later summarizes the Noric Alps merely as an outline Alps south of the Alps on, and one to the Gurktaler and Seetaler Alps, Saualpe, Koralpe Poßruck ( Kozjak ) - ie the southwest part of the Lavanttaler Alps - and Pohorje Mountain. Thus, the Noric Alps between Drava and Mura are (excluding the city of Graz mountains in Murknie ), the highest peak would be the aconite with 2441 m. This concept also is now fallen into disuse.

Alpi Noriche / Alpes noriques the Partizione delle Alpi 1926

Today in using the name but in the Partizione delle Alpi in 1926, the usual in Italy and France, partly in Switzerland and Alps classification. Here the group Alpi Noriche / Alpes noriques includes the number 17, the ranges of the Eastern Alps between Sill ( Brenner Pass ) to the west, Salzach -Enns Paltental Schoberpass Liesing - furrow to the north, Mur- Obdacher Saddle Lavant in the east, and Eisack -Drava - furrow in the south, so the eastern Central Alps ( under Austrian parlance). Thus, the Grossglockner is ( 3798 m above sea level. A. ) the highest mountain of the group.

It divides into:

Adjacent groups are 11 Rhaetian Alps ( Alpi Retiche / Alpes Rhétiques ) to the west, 15th Bavarian Alps ( [ pre- ] Alpi Bavaresi / [ Pré- ] Alpes Bavaroises ), 22 Salzburg Alps ( [ pre- ] Alpi Salisburghesi / [ Pré- ] Alpes de Bourg salt ) and 23 Austrian Alps ( [ pre- ] Alpi dell'Austria / [ Pré- ] Alpes d'Autriche ) in the north, 24 Styrian Alps ( Prealpi di Stiria / Préalpes de la Styrie ) in the east, and 18th Dolomites ( Dolomiti / Dolomites ), 19 Carnic Alps ( Alpi Carniche / Alpes carniques ), 21 Karawanken ( Caravanche / Karavanke ) in the south.

Alpi Noriche / Alpi Aurine / Alpi di Stiria e Carinzia the SOIUSA

According to the recently publicized Suddivisione orografica Internazionale Unificata del Sistema Alpino ( SOIUSA ), the Italian / French and to unite the German / Austrian division examines the will as a subgroup 19 Alpi Noriche (also Alpi Aurine or Alpi di Stiria e Carinzia, Styrian- Carinthian Alps ') out. This grouping includes only the area Gurktaler Alps southeast of the Turracherhöhe and Lavanttaler Alps, the highest peak is then the Great Rosennock ( 2440 m above sea level. A. ). It is then also fully part of the Central Alps.
