Norma Varden

Norma Varden ( born January 20, 1898 in London, † January 19, 1989 in Santa Barbara, California ) was a British actress who appeared primarily in numerous supporting roles as well as in the U.S. radio and television.

Life

The daughter of a retired ship captain and his much younger wife grew up in London in the turn of the century. First, she appeared as a pianist, but soon switched to acting. In 1940 she undertook with her now widowed, ailing mother a trip to the spa to California and settled there eventually settled. They soon established himself in Hollywood as a character actress in demand, particularly in rolls of the English Lady, or "funny old". On the side of many famous stars Varden played among others in the films of Alfred Hitchcock and Billy Wilder, by which it was known in Germany. She also appeared in numerous American radio shows of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s and most recently especially in the U.S. television series.

In 1969, she ended her career. In January 1989, died Varden, one day before her 91st birthday, of heart failure.
