Novosil

Nowosil (Russian Новосиль ) is a small town in Oryol Oblast ( Russia) ( October 14, 2010 status ) with 3658 inhabitants.

Geography

The city is located on the central Russian plate about 70 km east of the Oblasthauptstadt Oryol on the right bank of the Suscha, a right tributary of the opening into the Volga River Oka.

Nowosil is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1155 as a fortress Itil of the Principality of Chernigov. At the beginning of the 14th century it was already under the name Nowosil capital of a small independent principality.

At the beginning of the 15th century, the city fell to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, at the end of the century back to the Grand Duchy of Moscow, for its southern border keeps it belonged to the 17th century.

1777 a city charter was as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ) first the governorship, then awarded in the government of Tula.

During World War II Nowosil was occupied on 13 November 1941 by the German Wehrmacht, but recaptured on December 27th, 1941 by troops of the Bryansk Front Red Army as part of a retaliation towards Orel.

Situated off the main transport links, the city hardly developed until today economically.

Culture and sights

In Nowosil a number of buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries is obtained, the Mother of God Cathedral ( собор Божией Матери / Sobor Boschjej material ) from the end of the 18th century, the Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan, Kazan Church shortly ( Казанская церковь / Kazanskaya Tserkov ) in 1802 along with stone houses dating from the 19th century.

In the village of village Golun Rajons Nowosil is the former country estate of the noble family Golitsyn.

Economy

In Nowosil as the center of an agricultural area, there are companies in the food industry.

Nearest railway station is Sale Gosch sealed at the 1870 track opened Oryol - Yelets - Grjasi in 14 kilometer distance. By Nowosil leads the regional road Oryol - Yefremov.
