Nyköping

Nyköping ( [ ny: ɕœpɪŋ ], [ ny: çœpɪŋ ]; German outdated: Niekoping ) is a town in the Swedish province of Södermanland County and the historic province of Södermanland. The residence of the province is also chief town of the same name.

History

Archaeological excavations indicate an early medieval settlement. In the 12th century, the precursor to the castle Nyköpingshus was built, which was in the course of the following century one of the strongest fortresses in the kingdom.
