The Estadio Omnilife is a multi-purpose stadium in Zapopan, a suburb north-west of Guadalajara, in the Mexican state of Jalisco. The stadium should be named after the first local football club Chivas Guadalajara and bear the name Estadio Chivas. A month before the official opening was announced that the stadium would be named as a sponsor of the proposed Spanish telecommunication company Movistar. A week before the opening was then named as the new name Omnilife; by the company of the owner Jorge Vergara stadium, who is also president of the football club Chivas Guadalajara.

The volcano

The stadium was inaugurated on 29 July 2010 with a solemn ceremony. Present Mexican President Felipe Calderón and have included Representatives of associations FIFA, CONMEBOL and CONCACAF. A day later, the opening match between the CD Guadalajara and Manchester United took place, the 3-2 (2-1) decided the host itself. Javier Hernández, who played in the 2009/10 season for Chivas and moved to Manchester United for the 2010/11 season, played the first half in his old series and the second half in rows of the new employer. He was also the first scorer in the new stadium, when he succeeded in the 8th minute of the opening goal for Guadalajara. The other goals were scored by Chris Smalling in the 10th minute to 1:1, Adolfo Bautista in the 38th minute to make it 2-1, Héctor Reynoso after almost an hour to make it 3-1 and Nani in the 79th minute for the 3-2 - Final.

The first competitive match at the Estadio Omnilife took place at the final first-leg match at the Copa Libertadores 2010, Chivas Guadalajara and Inter Porto Alegre on 11 August 2010. Here is the favored Brazilians were superior to the outsider from Mexico over long distances and won deserved 2-1 (0-1). In the 45th minute Adolfo Bautista had given the home side a surprise 1-0 lead before Victor de Paula Giuliano ( 73 min) and Fabian Guedes Bolivar ( 77 ) were able to ensure the victory of favorites. All matches in this game were scored with a header by the way.

Primarily, the approximately 45,500 -seat stadium for the football matches of CD Guadalajara should be used. Although it has been associated with three official designations in connection even before his inauguration, his nickname el has volcán ( German: the volcano) until today.

Because the stadium is located along with its parking and all infrastructure, invisible to the outside world, "hidden" in a crater. But his roof rises like a cloud, out of the crater and is visible to outsiders. So the stadium fits harmoniously into the surrounding landscape, which consists of natural vegetation and located away from the big city hustle and bustle.

The unconventional design that was designed by the renowned French architecture firm Studio Massaud - Pouzet and built by the internationally operating construction firm HOK Sport Venue Event, arose from the idea to create something unique that stands out clearly from most stadiums in the world.

The playing surface

The playing surface is made of a synthetic grass, which is the product of a mixture of different fibers (made from silica and rubber). These materials make the lawn despite frequent use of robust and resistant to UV rays and all sorts of bacteria, which are the natural enemies of a natural lawn.
