Orhan DoÄŸan

Orhan Doğan ( born July 25, 1955 in Mardin, † 29 June, 2007 Van ) was a Kurdish politicians in Turkey.

Life

Childhood and youth

As the son of an official who has worked in various cities of Turkey, he attended secondary school in Ağrı and in Hatay and high school in Aydın and Bafra. 1974 erlang Doğan a place at the University of Ankara. Inspired by the television series about the lawyer Petrocelli to Doğan decided to study law. In addition to studying Doğan worked from 1975 to 1981 as a civil servant in accounting.

Professional career

In 1980, he completed his law studies. His internship he made at İsmail Mungan, the father of the author and poet Murathan Mungan. Then he went to Cizre and practiced his profession as a lawyer there. After the military coup in 1980, Doğan resigned as attorney in many processes. Already in the eighties, some attempts were made ​​on his life. In addition to his work as a lawyer Doğan was co-founder and years member of the Turkish Human Rights Association ( İnsan Haklari Derneği, İHD ).

Political career

In 1990, he joined the Halkin Emek Partisi (HEP ). Pursuant to the legal requirement that the founding date of a party must place more than six months to participate in an election, the HEP joined for the parliamentary elections in 1991 the Parti Erdal Inonu Sosyaldemokrat Halkçı. Doğan ran in Şırnak and was elected by a wide margin on October 20, 1991 into Parliament.

After the scandal surrounding Leyla Zana, who removed her oath in Turkish and Kurdish, the Kurdish deputies of the HEP were accused of being members and sympathizers of the PKK. Doğan as well as Leyla Zana, Dicle and Selim Sadak Hatip was stripped of his immunity so that they were arrested on 2 March 1994 in front of the Parliament building. The HEP as the party was banned, so now a new party - the Demokrasi Partisi (DEP ) was founded. Because membership in a separatist organization whose support and assistance all four deputies were sentenced to 15 years in prison. After ten years in prison Doğan was released with the other in 2004, as the European Court of Human Rights was looking at the process as a non- rule of law.

Soon Doğan became politically active again and joined the Demokratik Toplum Partisi (DTP ). Doğan expressed the view that the DTP would be a mass party which should also include the Turks. He was admitted at the last Congress of the DTP in May 2007 to the Central Committee and was a candidate for the elections. Because of his criminal record his candidacy was rejected by the Election Committee. Nevertheless Doğan wanted to make to choice.

Death

On June 24, 2007 Doğan suffered during a speech at the conclusion of the sixth Ehmedê Xani festivals in Doğubeyazıt a heart attack. In his speech he said: " The soldier who lost his life and that of our brothers are in the mountains. The bloodshed should be stopped. We are ready before the one that stops the bloodshed to bow us. On July 22, we will create a new Turkey. This is our honorable duty. I apologize that I have brought you no peace until today. "

To treat Doğan was taken to the University Hospital in Van, where he lay for several days in a coma. Doğan died in the morning on 29 June 2007 from heart and multiple organ failure in Van.

During his funeral, there were incidents between the police and the crowd that wanted to pick up the body of Dogan. The body was transported in an ambulance from the city of Diyarbakir. An amount of approximately 1000 people accompanied the carriage. Among those present were, among others, Leyla Zana, Selim Sadak, Hatip Dicle and Osman Baydemir. As the crowd shouted pro- PKK slogans and slogans, the police asked them to dissolve. Police used tear gas and zersprengte the crowd. The body was taken to a several hundred large car convoy to Cizre. Along the way, many people gathered. The gendarmerie had in turn set up security checkpoints.

From mourning the dealers in Cizre kept their shops closed. In order to pay their last respects, a visitor tent was erected in Cizre. The DTP and their mayors in Cizre announced three days of mourning.
