Ormat Technologies was founded by Ormat Industries Limited in 1994 in Delaware. The predecessor of the latter company Ormat Turbines was founded by Lucien and Dita Bronicki 1965 in Israel. In Germany the Ormattechnologien are represented by the plant company IGATEC GmbH.

Products

The used Ormat ORC process, ie the use of organic chemicals, especially of isopentane and isobutane instead of water in closed circuits to generate steam to drive turbines to generate electricity, allows the use of much lower temperatures of thermal waters and process heat in industrial processes than would be possible with water.

Assets of the company are also used for power generation in remote areas, such as for pipeline pumping stations. The closed circuit with evaporator, turbine (which drives the generator ) and cooler allows virtually maintenance free operation. The plants draw their heat from a burner, which receives its gas from tanks or directly from the pipeline.

Own power plants

The company generates over three-quarters of its revenue from the sale of electricity from geothermal power plants that it operates alone or with partners. Ormats electricity generating capacity in 2008 was 505 MW, of which 377 in the U.S..

Important Ormat geothermal power plants are:

  • 57- megawatt power plant ORMESA Complex, East Mesa, California
  • 92- megawatt power plant boar Complex, Heber, California
  • 84 - megawatt power plant Steamboat Complex, Steamboat, Nevada
  • 50 - megawatt power plant North Brawely, Imperial County, California
  • 28- megawatt power plant Momotombo, Nicaragua
  • 24 - megawatt power plant Zunil, Guatemala
  • 48 - megawatt power plant Olkaria III Complex, Kenya
  • 20 - megawatt power plant Amatitlan, Guatemala

Foreign power plants with Ormattechnik

In Austria 180 kW of electricity from 107 degrees obtained hot water since 2001 with a plant in Ormat, designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser thermal springs hotel Rogner Bad Blumau, which is funded from 2600 meters depth.

In Germany technology of Ormat is used for the 3- megawatt geothermal power plant Landau.
