OS X Server

OS X Server is the server version of the operating system OS X from Apple. It extends the normal operating system to software that simplifies the administration and operation of services such as web and e-mail.

History

Before Mac OS X came on the market, Apple introduced server services in the form of AppleShare for Mac OS available that offered file and print services.

The first version of Mac OS X Server was a hybrid of OPENSTEP out of the house NeXT Computer and Mac OS 8.5.1. The graphical user interface was rather similar to OPENSTEP, for older programs emulation was used to run programs from Mac OS 8.5.1 can run. Starting with Mac OS X Server 1.0-2 also programs for Mac OS were 8.6 support. WebObjects was included in the package.

Functions

Built on Server version 10.3 provides a full-fledged and well-equipped server system. User and file management are provided via Open Directory, which is LDAP - compatible. Many everyday network services such as NTP, SNMP, Web server, mail server, LDAP, AppleTalk, and print server are also available. Since Samba is built into version 3 in the system, Mac OS X Server can also work with Windows networks. The scripting languages ​​such as Perl and PHP are also included in the system.

The version 10.4 integrates other utilities that were derived from open-source projects. In version 10.4 ACLs are now supported.

After the introduction of Intel - Mac 2006 Mac OS X Server 10.4.7 came as a universal version out. This is the first version of Mac OS X, which can start from the same installation on PPC Macs and Intel Macs.

Since Mac OS X 10.7 the functionality of the previous server version is not longer available as a standalone operating system, but as a paid upgrade for the regular Mac OS X. What is new in the cluster file system Xsan, which was previously sold separately. In addition, the database system MySQL was replaced by PostgreSQL.
