Osvaldo Golijov

Osvaldo Golijov ( born December 5, 1960 in La Plata) is an Argentine composer of Eastern European Jewish descent.

Study

After Osvaldo Golijov had studied composition in La Plata piano and Gerardo Gandini at the Conservatory, he went to Israel in 1983. In Jerusalem he studied with Mark Kopytman at the Rubin Academy and immersed himself in the contrasting musical traditions of that city. He left in 1986 in the United States down to a doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. He studied with George Crumb and was a student of Oliver Knussen fellow at Tanglewood.

Career

In the early 1990s began Golijov closely with two string quartets together: the St Lawrence String Quartet and the Kronos Quartet. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the cooperation of Osvaldo Golijov and the St Lawrence String Quartet EMI published in 2002 " Yiddishbbuk ," a Grammy-nominated CD of Golijov's chamber music. The Kronos Quartet took three shots of projects with Golijov out: "The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind ", " Caravan" and " Nuevo ". Furthermore, the composer with the Romanian gypsy band Taraf de Haïdouks, the Mexican rock band Café Tacuba, tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and the Argentine composer, guitarist and producer Gustavo Santaolalla worked together. For the singer Dawn Upshaw, he composed "Three Songs for Soprano and Orchestra ," the opera " Ainadamar " the cycle " Ayre " and arrangements of folk songs. Great success Osvaldo Golijov celebrated with the premiere of "Mark Passion" (La Pasión según San Marcos ) in 2000. The work was commissioned to mark the 250.Todestags by Johann Sebastian Bach for the European Music Festival with Helmuth Rilling in order. The Hänssler published on CD recording of the first performance in 2002 was nominated for a Grammy Award and Latin Grammy. For the premiere of Golijov Ayre founded another ensemble: "The Andalucian Dogs". This led the work with Dawn Upshaw at Zankel Hall, and recorded it for the German Grammophon. The recording was released in January 2006 and was honored in the same year with a Gramophone Award in 2007 and a Grammy. Osvaldo Golijov has received numerous commissions from renowned ensembles and institutions in the U.S. and Europe. Among his many awards including a MacArthur Fellowship. Osvaldo Golijov 's Composer in Residence at numerous festivals and orchestras (Chicago Symphony Orchestra for the 2006 /07 and 2007/ 08, the Spoleto Festival, the series "Music Alive " of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, festivals of Marlboro and Ravinia etc ). The composer is currently associate professor at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, where he has taught since 1991, and also belongs to the faculty of the Boston Conservatory.
