Outjo ( Otjiherero for "little hill " ) is a town and eponymous constituency in the Kunene region in Namibia. The town has 8400 inhabitants.

Outjo lies south of the eastern foothills of the Fransfonteinberge on the main road C39 and is divided into the two districts of Outjo and Etoshapoort.

The city is regarded as the birthplace of Mardi Gras in Namibia.

History

Since the 16th century live in the Kunene region, the Himba, Herero related to a Bantu ethnic group. The town of Outjo was founded in 1897 by German colonial troops after the then Major Theodor Leutwein had built a military base to explore the unknown north of German South-West Africa. In the local museum ( Franke House Museum ), the expeditions of Major Victor Franke are shown in Ovamboland. The Naulila monument reminiscent of the punitive expedition to the Portuguese Fort of Naulila in Angola, which was led by Victor Franke in October 1914. This was after a massacre at a German delegation, which wanted to close a non-aggression pact carried out.

Local Politics

In the 2010 local elections the following official final result was determined.

Attractions

Outjo offers some attractions, but above all an important tourist transit and destination of supply. In 2006, more than 22,000 tourists were counted per month.

Near the city is the erosion caused by finger cliff.

Outjo has a Trans- Namib Railway terminal and airfield (Airfield Outjo ), a hospital and a clinic.

Immediately in Outjo, there are three primary schools and two secondary schools and a combined private school with a total of 2634 students and 96 teachers. (As of December 2009)
