Pacific Ocean Blue

Pacific Ocean Blue is the first solo music album by Dennis Wilson. It was released under the label Caribou Records in 1977. The album was produced by Dennis Wilson and Gregg Jakobson.

A prequel to the album

Dennis Wilson was the drummer for the Beach Boys, but was represented at almost any Beach Boys studio album because the drums were played by a studio musician.

Wilson got multiple offers to record a solo album. In 1970 he tried for the first time on solo recordings. He has published in Europe a single under the name Dennis Wilson & Rumbo that flopped, however. In 1975, he launched his second attempt. He got a contract offer from Caribou Records. Initially wanted Jim Guercio, President of Caribou and producer from Chicago, produce the album, but this came from this task to Wilson.

Since Dennis stood as " Beach Boy" at this time also at Warner Bros. contract, he had to be exempted for Caribou first. Warner did so only under the conditions that Dennis gave up solo concert tours and no other Beach Boy should be represented on the album. The Treaty of pages caribou gave him all the freedom, Dennis could determine Rahme in the contract itself, when he wanted to release an album and how many.

From 1971 to 1972 he had worked with Darryl Dragon on his first solo album. In the following two years, he intensified his studio work. Dennis wrote at that time constantly adding new songs. But his love for the Beach Boys made ​​him delay the start of his solo career again and again. In addition, he graduated with the Beach Boys intensive tours. In 1976, he finally began to work on his new project. It bore the working title " Freckles ". His constant companion in the studio was his friend Gregg Jakobson.

Wilson plays on the album a variety of instruments. On the album next to him many other musicians were involved. Dennis played all the piano and keyboard sequences, the drums with Ricky Fataar, Hal Blaine and Beach Boys drummer Bobby Figueroa shared. The guitars and bass are mostly by Ed Carter, the support of Ed Tuleja received. For this purpose, a variety of brass musicians and the Double Rock Baptist Choir were involved. The backing vocals on the album are mostly from Dennis, Curt cup, Billy Hinsche, Bruce Johnston and Dennis' wife Karen Lamm - Wilson. The Beach Boys were not allowed to participate in the album, but some are, quite clearly heard Carl Wilson in particular.

He wrote all the songs himself, where he was supported by his friends Gregg Jakobson, Steve Kalinich, his brother Carl and his wife Karen Lamm -Wilson, who wrote numerous texts for him. For Thoughts of You Dennis worked with Jim Dutch, for which he was later to produce an album.

The album made ​​it to number 96 of the U.S. Billboard charts.

In June 2008, the album containing the complete " Bambu sessions " and other rare recordings was re-released as a double CD. The re-release reached rank 16 in the UK charts.

Planned tour

For promotion of the album, a tour was planned. He had already assembled a live band around, which consisted of Charles Munoz, Billy Hinsche, Ed Carter, Ed Tuleja, Bobby Figueroa and his brother Carl Wilson. In addition, a horn ensemble was already booked. Samples were held, these included, in addition to the POB- songs and the song Baby Blue Eyes which was released in 1979 on the album Light of the Beach Boys. The tour was canceled almost at the last moment, because Dennis was given the choice to choose between the Beach Boys and a solo career.

The main problem was that Dennis was a Beach Boy at Warner Bros. contract, his soloist contract, however, was completed at Caribou Records. He got the release of Warner Bros. only under conditions.

Song Info

River Song is a piece that was planned for the Beach Boys. There is a studio version of the group in 1973 with the lead voice of Blondie Chaplin. The song is backed by a gospel choir. It was the only single from the album flopped.

Thoughts of You: already in 1970, Dennis wrote a part of this song under the title All of My Love. After separating from his wife, he wrote the text to its present form.

Pacific Ocean Blues is another Beach Boys song, which was not used. Mike Love contributed the text. The song was originally planned for the album 15 Big Ones.

Farewell My Friend 'was written friend Otto " Pops " Hinsche, the father of Billy Hinsche, in Dennis' in memory of Dennis died poor. This song was played six years later on Dennis' own funeral.

Rainbows was written by Dennis and Stephen Kalinich. They worked the mid-1970s on several songs, but Dennis wanted to keep for a later project.

End of the show was re-recorded in 1977 by Cliff Richard & The Shadows.

Dennis wanted to release the song Schoolgirl on the album. Here, Dennis sings about the love of a young schoolgirl. His former wife Karen Lamm -Wilson advised him of a publication, as they kept the text to bold.

Steve Kalinich had written for the album a song about Helen Keller, who is, however, not yet published.
