Paderborn (Illinois, USA) ( short: Paderborn, IL) is a census -designated place in St. Clair County in the southwest of the U.S. state of Illinois.

Paderborn is very small: A church and a community hall, together with a guest house, the center of the town, which has only about 10 houses. The place is dominated by agriculture.

Geography

The distance to the center of Waterloo is approximately 12 km. Saint Louis ( in neighboring Missouri) is about 37 km, about 500 km north Chicago. Belleville, the twin city of Paderborn in North Rhine -Westphalia, is also located in a northerly direction at a distance of 19 km. The Mississippi River flows about 35 km west of Paderborn and also forms the border with Missouri.

History

From about 1800 French settlers passed through the land, and were in part also a resident. ( Therefore, place names such as " Saint Louis ", " Saint Clair ". ) From 1830 was then a rush German settlers, who, for the most part, however, came partly from other areas of the U.S. from Germany.

In 1861 the pastor Wilhelm Busch was the German settlement " German Settlement of Prairie du Long ," the name " Paderborn ".

As early as 1859 a Catholic church was built, which was dedicated to St. Michael. The names on the grave stones in the old cemetery next to the church reminiscent of the German immigrants of the 19th century.

Traffic

The Illinois Route 3 and Illinois Route 156 pass nearby in north-south or east-west direction.

Flying

The Sackman Field Airport ( in Columbia ( Illinois)) is approximately 16 km in a north-westerly direction.

Twinning

The residents of Paderborn, like the community of St. Libory of Belleville involved in the activities of the closed in 1990 cities twinned with the East Westphalian city of Paderborn. Outside the church is a large sign above information.
