Päijänne Tavastia

Päijät -Häme [ Päijät hæmɛ ] ( swedish Päijänne Tavastland ) is one of 19 landscapes of Finland. Since 1997 it belongs to the province of Southern Finland. The name is composed of malice, which is one of the old, historic landscapes of Finland, and from Päijänne, one of the major Finnish lakes. As the name suggests, the region is characterized by this north-south direction elongated lake. The landscape is hilly and varied. The southern part, however, is rather flat and without any major body of water. Administrative seat and largest city is Lahti. The area of ​​Päijät -Häme is 6257 km ², the population is about 200,000.

History

1870, the railway line was Riihimäki - Saint Petersburg opened and one year later the channel of Vääksy. Since the transport and trade played an important role in the region. Lahti village was founded in 1905 as the city and has since become an important trading town. As a venue for winter sports competitions ( World Cup Ski Jumping, Nordic World Ski Championships 2001), Lahti international fame with his three jumps. Since 1924, the radio station Lahti is in operation.
